PADI Open Water Diver
This course is the start of your scuba diving training. In our relaxed and friendly facility it will be an experience you will never forget!
Are you ready to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Diver?
With the PADI Open Water Diver course, we can offer you an experience and qualification purely based on your performance and abilities. This is one of the most enjoyable courses that PADI offers and Orca Scuba Diving Academy ensures you will have an amazing experience.
The minimum age for this course is 10, however those aged 10-15 will be awarded the PADI Junior Open Water certification instead. All students must also complete pre-requisite paperwork before commencing the course, which is provided by Orca Scuba Diving Academy
Outline of the PADI Open Water Diver course:
PADI Open Water Diver Knowledge Development:
This course is purely a self-study method, allowing you to complete it at your own pace, in your own time. On a Tuesday evening at our dive centre in Basildon, Essex, we have a meeting to discuss the sections of the dive manual that you have been studying, before completing a quick quiz. After the final Knowledge Development session, you will sit an exam to complete the theory side to scuba diving. But don’t worry; our staff will help to prepare you for the exam, so it should be a breeze!
After each Knowledge Development class, there is always a pool session.
Confined Water Pool Sessions:
In this section of the course you will learn the necessary skills in order to scuba dive safely. These include buoyancy and clearing your mask as well as a 200 metre swim (there’s no time limit) and 10 minutes of treading water. These skills must be demonstrated before you can move into the Open Water section of the course. But again, there is no need to worry if you feel you are not ready. We are more than happy to arrange further sessions in the pool to build your confidence, before progressing to the next stage; all you need to do is ask!
Open Water Dives:
The final and most exciting stage of the Open Water course! To complete this section you will have to demonstrate the skills you have learnt during your pool sessions in four open water dives, all spanning over two days. These dives take place at one of our designated Open Water Dive sites.
However, many people like to complete the open water dive whilst on holiday, because of the warmer waters! If this applies to you, then please call Gary at the dive centre, who will talk you through this procedure.
